MYMM: Awkward Questions

Did you get a scholarship? What was your SAT score? Do you have a job/internship yet? Is that what you really wanted to do?

AH. Every single one of us is being asked a form of the dreaded personal/awkward question. Somehow, these have become acceptable questions to ask. all. the. time. Here are our tips for handling these questions gracefully.

1. Be vague. What was your ACT score? Oh, I was pretty happy with it! I worked really hard. If you're comfortable saying you got in the upper twenties, go for it. But don't feel obligated.
2. Say you're happy/excited. Even if you wanted to go to a school, but got rejected, don't feel like you have to say. If you act happy about it, you prevent potential negativity.
3. Change the topic. Nosy Mrs. Nicholas won't stop asking you about your job, change the subject-ask her about her children, the weather, her summer vacation...people should get the memo that you don't want to share details.
4. Worst case scenario: Simply say you would rather not talk about it. It's perfectly ok not to give into the pressure.

Remember, you can handle awkward questions!

Olympic Madness

It's our favorite time-Olympic Season! We love the summer and winter olympics, but are especially pumped that they are in London. I (C) was in London last summer, and I am absolutely ready to move there. It's great to see what it's like for the Olympics-what a beautiful city!

I'm partial to swimming and I could not resist sharing this hilarious video-USA Swim Team does Call Me Maybe! Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, and Missy Franklin are just some the swimmers in this video!

The gorgeous Duchess of Cambridge

The US Men's Gymnastics Team

We love watching the Opening Ceremonies, swimming, diving, gymnastics, and beach volleyball! Of course, they are all wonderful. What is your favorite part to watch?

School Bags 101

Oh my gosh, the school bag! I don't know how many posts on tumblr we see asking about the ever so important everyday school bag. We're going to tell you about 4 of the popular choices with what we've found works best for different scenarios!

1. The Vineyard Vines Tote: This is a classic tote for sure. They cost about $95, but are made very well. The canvas is very durable and holds its shape well while carrying textbooks. This is probably not the most practical for the high school student carrying 4 textbooks, 3 binders, and 2 notebooks home. We see this as more practical if you have less books to carry. Bonus: they come in cute patterns of many schools. Con: the light color shows dirt, and cleaning the silk is not easy.

2. The Longchamp Le Pliage Large: First of all, if you have any intentions of carrying books, binders, or notebooks, you need the large! This is a popular choice among high school and college students. It's very durable but won't hold a shape as well as the Vineyard Vines tote does. I personally find that this hurts my shoulder if I'm carrying a lot of things. It will also set you back about $145, so it's on the pricier side.

3. The North Face Jester: Perhaps the most common backpack around, it has a good reason! It's durable and comes in many colors. I've had mine for four years, and it's still going strong. I think that backpacks are the most practical for carrying a large load of classes-definitely think backpacks are better for high school and college if you have a lot! I always carry a backpack/purse to class. It's reasonably priced at $65.

4. The Vera Bradley Vera: These bold Vera Bradley totes are very popular. They hold up fairly well, although I did notice fading when I used mine in eighth grade. I think I'd shy away from them, because I thought it hurt my shoulders! They run about $86, so they are the least expensive of the tote options. They are great because they are washable, however, it's easy to get sick of such a bold pattern!

That's our blow by blow of school bags! Let us know what you use!

Simplify Your Hair Routine

Hair. We all have a love/hate relationship with our hair. It can be really high maintenance and time consuming to take care of. There are so many days where we simply don't have the time or energy to spend perfecting our hair. Here are ways to save time and still look chic!

  • Find a good dry shampoo. This will become your best friend once you find one that you love. It's not good for your hair to wash it everyday, but we don't want to look greasy either. This is when the dry shampoo comes in. I love the KMS California Hair Play Dry Touch Up, but the Tresseme one is also supposed to be wonderful! (haven't tried myself, so I can't say from personal experience.)
  • The shower cap. Call me a grandmother, but this is my best friend when I don't want to get my hair what but still want to shower. You can get them at Target for a few dollars, and they also have disposable ones for travel (I always take the ones from hotel rooms.) Also, Nordstrom Rack has cute ones (random, I know.)
  • Microfiber Hair Towel. I'm on my second one of these and I love it. I use it every single time I wash my hair, and it cuts drying time in half.
Diva Darling via
  • Headbands and baseball caps. Need I say more? We've already done a post on baseball caps here, and they really are great on lazy hair days or when you know you'll be outside. Plus, we all know I (C) am obsessed with headbands. There will be a full headband post soon!
  • The sock bun. Oh my goodness, how I adore this hair style. It's been great all summer, remember when I posted on trying it earlier? I did, and love it. However, it works much better using a mesh donut than a sock.

How do you save time on your hair? Let us know!

Keeping Up With Current Affairs

Current events. We may not all be news junkies, but,  I (C) happen to find it super important to keep up with what is going on locally, nationally, and internationally.
Here's Why:
  • It's something to talk about. Whether it's with your parents, professor, peer,  or the lady checking out in front of you at Target, the news is all something relevant.
  • It's impressive. Not many young people can say that they do keep up with the news at all, and our elders love concerned and aware youth.
  • It's bound to come up in your classes come fall. If you're in a history class, it's going to come up for sure. History repeats itself, and you can always make a past connection with something that is happening today.
  • Do it for yourself! It's necessary to be aware of the world around you and beyond your school and family. It's great practice for later on!

But, we know it's not necessarily going to be easy to start this habit. So, here our some tips:

  • Subscribe to a news email list. USA Today offers a free letter everyday, and you can select your choices! It's super easy to check it out on the way to class or as you drink your morning latte.
  • Make a habit of watching at least part of your local news once a day. Normally, the most important things are first, so even if you only get 10 minutes in, you'll get most of the significant stories covered.
  • The same with the national news. Try to catch a few minutes everyday!
  • Follow news stations/newspapers' twitter accounts. You check twitter all the time, and probably are already following Perez Hilton, why not throw in FoxNews or NBC to the mix?
  • Make a habit of bringing the news up in conversations; your parents will love this!! Come fall, you'll be able to talk to teachers about the news, which is great practice for the workforce where you'll be expected to know what is going on.
Do you keep up with the news? Let us know if you have any other tips.

Happy Bastille Day! As I was in France on Bastille Day last year, I had to relive some of my photos of France for the occasion! All photos are mine, as I live vicariously through last July 14th!

Many Benefits

This line of cosmetics has been around awhile. But, I've recently discovered how awesome Benefit Cosmetics' products are! (this is unpaid/unsponsored, just a real love!) The whimsical names and packaging don't hurt the amazing products! All of the images are from the Sephora Benefit Page

Benefit Watts Up: "a soft focus highlighter for the face." (love this!)

Benefit They're Real Mascara: "a jetblack mascara that lengthens, curls, volumizes, separates, and lifts for a spectacular out there look." (amazing and worth the price!)
Benefit Benetint: "the original and still the best rose tinted chic and lipstain"
Benefit Hoola Bronzer: "a beautiful bronzing powder."
Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Skinny Dip: "packaged in a one of kind lipstick case with Benefit's signature loop. Benefit's silky finish lipstick is the ultimate status simple that's so fabulously sexy, you'll want one in every shade." (love!!)

Floral Shorts

What a major trend this summer! Do you love them or leave them? I think the right pair can be super cute and easy, but some of them are not so cute. Here are a few!

Sport them with a simple white tank and Jack Rogers, and you have an easy summer outfit.

Would you wear these?

"Me" Time

When was the last time anyone dedicated a whole day to just "you?" I don't think I have had this all summer. Me time does not equal running to Target and the grocery store for errands and  going to the pool with many others! Here is how we would spend our time! (We're going to have one of these days before summer is over.)

Mani/Pedi, clearly!

Starbucks drink of choice!

A little bit of shopping for fun! (not to replace a white v neck!) Just for fun.

Work out class or run of choice!

Relaxing on the couch with some books, magazines and a favorite movie!

I cannot wait to have one of these days! We think everyone should have at least one this summer!! Make it a goal to schedule one and let us know!

MYMM: Froyo/Ice Cream Shops

I bet you're wondering why there is a post on manners at an ice cream store...Yes it's totally odd. But, I (C) was at a local frozen yogurt place last week and was appalled at people's behavior.

1. Don't sample dozens of flavors. If you're curious about the new raspberry orange gelato, try a sample! But, if you're the one sampling chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, other customers will get annoyed and you'll hold up the line.
2. Be ready to order if it's crowded. If you're amongst dozens of other people at Maggie Moos, it can be annoying to others if you're contemplating between cookie dough or oreo ice cream with a line out the door! (same goes at Froyo places! move as quick as possible!)
3. Don't take up extra chairs. Seating is prime on a hot summer night!
4. Clean up all cones/spoons/napkins/bowls. Obviously.
5. Smile and say thank you! No surprise we end on this note!

Nail Polish Favorites: Summer 2012 (C)

I (C) received a request for us to each do a top 5 favorite nail colors this summer...Here are mine! In the summer, I am all about bright and fun colors. A's will be here tomorrow!

Essie Mojito Madness via
This color is basically the bomb. I've been wearing it a ton this summer and have received a million compliments every single time. It even made it into my June favorites.

Essie Splash of Grenadine via
Essie Splash of Grenadine is a staple. I love love love it. It's such a great summery pink that many of you have had!

Essie Lapis of Luxury via
This is a color I've had since it came out (2010) and I have loved it since. It was one of the first colors I actually bought myself, and not borrowed or used at a nail salon!

Essie Tart Deco via
This is another super popular and fabulous color from last year. I love the coraly peachy perfection of this one!

Essie Turquoise and Caicos via
Yet another cult favorite. I love this one and it actually took me forever to hunt down. I never had luck finding it!

What are your favorites!?

I've Got The Magic...Magic Mike Reviews

Last weekend, A and I both saw Magic Mike. We know many of you have too, so let us know what you thought!

C's Thoughts:
This is definitely not a movie with substance. This is the type of mindless movie you go and see with some girlfriends. The movie has one thing going for it: the gorgeous lead actors. They are clearly the draw to the movie. I wish that there would have been more love involved with the movie. I'm glad I saw it-a fun mindless escape, with funny moments (and hot actors!)

A's Thoughts:
Like C said, Magic Mike is not a movie you want to see if you're looking for a deep and meaningful plot, conflict, solution, ect. Lets be honest- the reason why you go to see it is because of the men. To me, this movie felt very much like a night out with my friends. 'Ooh'ing and 'aah'ing throughout the movie was a common occurrence and was, in fact, encouraged. There were moments of laughter here and there. There is even a mini love plot thrown in there. And seriously...Channing Tatum has some major stripper skills. Trust me. Go see it.

The Queen B of Celebrity Children

In light of the news of TomKat's recent divorce, we had to put together a little style inspiration from the one and only queen of the lucky sperm club, Suri Cruise.

I mean seriously- girl has her own fashion blog and online burn book.

Spotted wearing a Juicy Couture dress in Kent, CT (aka the home of my beloved sleep away camp). Girl looks like she should have millions of celebrity children minions following her, am I right?

Check out that cute dress peaking out from behind that massive Angelina Ballerina stuffed thing. Chic.

More florals. Suri def loves florals. Look at her drinking Pellegrino without a care in the world.

Mexican style dress + fur + cupcake. Need we say more?

Of course Suri wore it best. She is the reigning champion of the celebrity children world.

The Queen sporting a crown and kitten heels. The only being on this earth who can rock a kitten heel.

Ok so while this post was really just a joke, we are actually sort of sad by the news of the divorce.

RIP TomKat.

Stay Chic, Suri.

C's June Favorites

Where oh where has this month gone?! Obviously my favorite thing about June was just the pure summer aspect!

This Tervis water bottle has been saving my life. It keeps things insulated and doesn't sweat. It's great for the 90 degree heat I've felt lately!

I picked this up on a whim at Sephora a couple of weeks ago and I've been hooked. It's so neutral and can be worn day or night. It's Smashbox Pop!

Bing cherries. I've basically been living off of these this summer. They are absolutely delicious and so refreshing.

I'm madly in love with Essie Mojito Madness. I've worn this a ton lately and it's such a gorgeous summer color!!

The J.Crew Boardwalk tote has been my workhorse! love love love it.

Love,
C
