NYE Chic

It's not exactly rocket science to throw on a sparkly dress with pumps for your NYE festivities. We love how easy that look is, but we also know that not everyone has the desire to rock a full on sequin dress, hence the choice of pants and a skirt.

1. Glitter Top + Black Pants + Reva Flats: This is a great look if you're just going to dinner or to a party. It's easy to get away with just wearing flats if heels aren't your gig.
2. Cream Top + Polka Dot Skirt + Two Tone Pewter Pumps: This look is fun but sophisticated. It's great for a dinner out, or for a party. It's definitely a little bit different than the average sparkle skirt, and we love that!
3. Two Tone Silk Blouse + Leather Pants + Nude Pumps: Maybe glitter isn't your thing. Totally understand. I'm not always a huge sparkle person. The leather pants are still cocktail appropriate, and the two toned top are super fun too.

What will you rock for NYE?

Skin Saviors

This cold winter weather has definitely been a "reality check" for our skin. Here are a few things that have helped us this winter thus far!

1. Burt's Bees Cuticle Cream: Totally saves my dry and cracked cuticles. A great buy at $5.99, and smells great too!
2. Nivea Essentially Enriched Lotion: We love this stuff. It moisturizes our skin. It's the only thing that helps me, and it's readily accessible at Target. Worth a shot!
3. Fresh Sugar Lip Scrub: I have a confession: my lips take a huge toll in the winter. This scrub is awesome. It was $22.50 at Sephora, so it's not cheap. But, this should last me for at least a year. I use it 2-3 times a week, and my lips no longer suffer.
4. Philosophy Purity Made Simple Face Wash: Two words: Holy. Grail.
5. True Blue Shea Cashmere Hand Creme: Awesome stuff. Smells great! It would be a perfect little gift for yourself or a friend.
6. Fresh Sugar Advanced Lip Therapy: Another thing that is a splurge at $25. I got a mini in a kit. And it's a totally holy grail. I use it twice a day and it's amazing. I did break down and buy the full size. I know it makes a huge difference because my DAD noticed my lips looked a lot better. (it's worth it if you struggle with lips!)

Christmas Craft!

Yes, you read the title right. A craft. Now, I'm no Martha Stewart. But, my mother is! This is a super easy and fun little craft: Peppermint Trees. No, this isn't from interest, although this might be on there by now. Last winter, my mom found these darling peppermint trees at a boutique. She was slightly alarmed when they were $40 a piece, so she decided to make her own! (and I made one too!)

1. Supplies: Hot glue gun, peppermint balls (unwrapped) and styrofoam cones.
2. Unwrap the peppermints.
3. Hot glue around cone

Tips:
-Start from the bottom.
-Turn them all the same way.
-Can alternate with other candy (peppermint flats), which looks darling.

Finished Product:

Disclosure: This is the one I made, not my mother. Hers are PERFECT. Mine isn't, but I had to show my own work :)

Have you ever tried this? Will you?

Clutched

When we go out, we take a smaller purse or clutch. Yes, it creates problems for many of us. How do you decide what to keep in them, especially when space is at a premium?

1. Phone: Fully charged, of course!
2. Lipstick of the evening
3. Coin Purse with ID/Credit Card/Cash: Avoid leaving these loose in your purse! It's also great to find a purse with pockets for ID and credit cards!
4. Rollerball of Fragrance
5. Listerine Strips: They take up so much less room than a tin of mints. Also, they are fast. IF you just ate something and that hot guy is headed your way, you can pop one and have fresh breath in under 30 seconds.
6. Deodorant: Especially if you get hot easily or you're dancing!
7. Blotting Linens

Dress Festive!

One part we love about the holiday season is festive dress. Here are fun and formal looks for a holiday party or Christmas Eve/Day!

Look #1: Gold jacquard skirt + Black tee + Basic black pumps + Black tights +Bib necklace. This is my favorite look. It's such a knockout. The all black is classic, but the jacquard skirt with the zipper detail and the bib necklace make this look beyond festive.
Look #2: Bow Cords + Navy silk top + Gold pumps + Bow/Pearl necklace. Maybe you're not into the glitter look. That's ok. The bows on the cords are so fun, and it's great to pull it all together with the necklace.
Look #3: Knockout dress + Classic Pumps + Quilted bag + Cocktail ring. If you really want to be a show stopper, look no further than this! The look is elegant. A dress like this will leave you reaching for it party after party and year after year. (maybe I just really want this dress. I really want this dress.)

What do you wear to holiday parties? Let us know!

MYMM: Holiday Parties

By now, you've probably been to many holiday parties. You probably have many more to come. Here are a few basic etiquette tips to ensure you'll be invited back!

1. Don't come empty handed. Bring an appetizer or dessert if asked. It's also nice to bring a little hostess gift, like a candle or Christmas ornament.
2. Follow the times set on the invitation. If it's a 7-10 party, you better leave by 10. It's inconsiderate to overstay, especially if the hostess has children or if it is during the work week.
3. Help the hostess out. A simple hey Anna, can I do anything is so thoughtful and the simple  could you bring out a tray of appetizers? could help her out a lot.
4. Be mindful of what you say. Especially with the election year, it's important not to step on anyone's toes!
5. Follow up with a thank you note!

A Moment of Silence

For all of those who lost someone in the Connecticut shooting yesterday. For anyone who has a tie to Sandy Hook.

Now is a great time to say a prayer (for those of us who do pray) for all of those lost in shooting massacres: Connecticut, Virginia Tech, Columbine, Aurora Colorado, and Portland.

Say a prayer that they may rest in peace. And don't forget how important it is to tell family and friends that you love them.

Sincerely,
A+C

Exam week. We're thinking about the Emperical Formula, the functions of the amygdla, and the basis for capital punishment. We don't really have the time to think through our ensembles. Some of us like to be more comfy and casual. Here are three looks we love.

Look 1: Classic Exam Week: fleece and yoga pants.
Look 2: Tee + Vest + Leggings. Good for layering.

To ED or Not to ED

We received a question on tumblr from a user wondering if she should apply EDII to a school. Here is our pro and con list. And of course, reasons to ED or not to ED.

Apply ED If...

  • You are 100% sure you want to go there.
  • Your thoughts about your second choice are not remotely as strong as your potential ED school.
  • Financial Aid is not a concern.
  • You aren't trying to be an athlete or any other kind of specific program.
  • You are not a commitment phobe.
  • The school may be a reach school, and your chances would be higher if you applied ED (only if it's your #1 though!)
Do Not Apply ED If...
  • You are less than 100% sure.
  • You have two schools you are in love with. (You can only ED to one!)
  • Your choice of college depends on cost. (After an ED acceptance, you are bound to the school and must withdraw all other applications and acceptances without comparing financial aid offers.)
  • The school is lacking any of your "nonnegotiable"aspects. (A family friend applied ED to a school, and she wanted to be a nurse. The school didn't have nursing, and she ended up transferring for her program. Don't do that.)
  • You change your mind a lot.
ED Pros
  • You are done with your college process SO EARLY.
  • You will not have to worry about waiting for any more acceptances.
  • You may be able to attend an earlier orientation or have housing priorities.
  • Your acceptance chances are frequently much higher if you apply ED as opposed to EA or final deadline.
  • You have the chance to be deferred at least one more time, so another possible chance for acceptance.
  • You can accept some of the first wait list offers, if you are wait listed.
ED Cons
  • You are limited.
  • You cannot back out of the offer if you have second thoughts or it is too expensive.
  • You probably will never know about scholarships and acceptances to other schools.
  • The very fact that you have to withdraw other applications, even if you are curious about admission statuses of other schools.
  • You may have a change of heart and be stuck.
  • Don't quote me on this: some say that you have a smaller chance of getting financial aid if you apply ED. I have no idea on the validity of this statement, it probably varies from university to university.
We EDed because our schools were reaches. We had much higher chances of being admitted if we applied ED. We also aren't the type who change our minds. Our parents agreed that this was the best idea. It's so different from person to person! Make sure you really think about your choice, and that your parents are on board 110%.

MYMM: Testing 1, 2, 3

Testing. You're probably in the middle of or about to be taking exams. We think (and know) that there are a few basic rules to follow.  No one wants to be the irritating person sitting in front of you.

1. Don't talk about how much or how little you studied. We all have that friend who says she "studied 20 minutes" for an APUSH exam and gets a 4. We have that friend who says "I studied 9 hours and I don't feel prepared." Yup. It's annoying and can lead to excessive stress.
2. Do not smack gum, tap your feet, or click your pen. Oh my gosh talk about an easy and annoying distraction. Sophomore year, I was sitting next to a girl who tapped her feet during the whole 90 minute European History exam. If you have a chronic habit, cross your legs, don't chew gum, or don't use a clicking pen. Your fellow test takers will thank you.
3. Be prompt. Yes, someone is bound to walk in 5 minutes late to an exam with Starbucks in hand. #whitegirlproblem. Don't let that be you. Try to arrive 5-10 minutes early. (or 15 if you're neurotic about where you sit.)
4. Don't ask people what they got for a certain question. It's so easy to do. You thought about 21 the whole time and couldn't decide between b or c. Chances are, the other person won't remember. Or you'll disagree and stress yourself out saying you "failed"
5. That being, don't say you aced/failed the exam. Yikes, talk about bad karma. Just say: I didn't think it was too challenging or it was much harder than I expected!
6. Thank your professor and proctors!

Let us know if we missed anything!

Exam Shopping!

You read that right: exam shopping. Every time exams come around, I like to go and pick up some supplies and motivation to help me get through the dreaded tests. Some of the things are necessities, others, not so much. (note: I don't buy all of this every time, but these are my
"suggestions!"

1. Colored Pens
2. New Mechanical Pencils (I always do this, scantrons!)
3. Post It Flags (yes, I will go through a whole packet each time.)
4. Coffee Mug (motivates me to drink it from home, and great for tea at night.)
5. New Post-Its (again, I go through insane amounts.)
6. New Nail Polish (it's more fun to be staring at your hands, editing, writing, or typing if your nails are festive.)
7. New Music (study playlists!)
8. Index Cards
9. Gum (it helps you remember things...? who knows, but I'll try!)
10. Fun Socks
11. Candle

Is there anything you always buy pre-exam week?
let us know!

Anna Wintour Interview

One of our favorite tumblr(ers) Muffy at whitegirlblog, posted this super fascinating interview:

What 13 People Wore To Their Interview With Anna Wintour

For fun, here is something we'd love to wear for out dream interview with the one and only Anna Wintour!
A Proenza Schouler skirt is the key piece. The classic print is updated with the bit of leather. The skirt is still modest enough. Pair it with a classic De La Renta blouse and a Helmut Lang blazer, naturally. Throw on classic accessories. Perhaps a pair of Louboutins with a classic black satchel and a Van Cleef and Arpels bracelet. Of course, to pull the purple in, we've added in a small vintage brooch to the lapel of the blazer.

We wouldn't forget to have a blowout and freshly manicured nails. Probably some makeup done as well.

What a fantasy interview! We love to escape into realm of couture from time to time!

What would you wear to interview with Anna Wintour??

IBD Awareness Week

Today, I (C) would like to interrupt the normal posts about fashion, manners, and school to talk about something that means the world to me. This week is national Crohn's and Colitis Awareness week, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Definition of Inflammatory Bowel Disease from Mayo Clinic

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves chronic inflammation of all or part of your digestive tract. IBD primarily includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. IBD can be painful and debilitating, and sometimes leads to life-threatening complications.

I'm C, and I have Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Unfortunately, my doctors are not sure if it is Crohn's or Colitis, so it's classified as Indeterminate IBD. This isn't something I have ever posted about on this blog, but I talk about it on my tumblr frequently. I try to keep KAK as my "outlet" for posting about fun things I enjoy writing about.

This is not one of them. There is nothing "fun" about battling this illness. But it's something that I've learned to live with. Although I don't enjoy this disease, I feel that I need to raise awareness.

So, if you don't know what IBD is, or anyone who has it, (you do now!) Take a minute to find some information about it and be aware.

(and colitis.)

If anyone has any questions, shoot me an email or check out my tumblr. Thanks for reading this post.

xoxo,
C

(PS: If anyone has a cause they would like to see us post on, let us know! We loving learning about things that our readers are passionate about!)

Things Just Work Out

Hey everyone, This is a little bit more of a personal post, courtesy of yours truly, C.

Last weekend, I was accepted to the school of my dreams. I have never been so excited. After months of working my you know what off preparing for the ACT, taking it 6 times, 16 college visits, 9 applications, too many essays to count, and many hours contemplating my future, It all worked out. There were more moments than not when I thought I would not make it into this school that was a bit of a reach for me. It worked out. I told myself that if I wasn't accepted, than a better plan was in the works for me.

But it was so hard, deep down, I knew that I could be happy at more than one place. But only one place truly felt like home to me. So, if you are discouraged about anything (especially anxious seniors), just know that things work out. And all of that hard work pays off when you get a letter in the mail, email, phone call or anything else. That moment of hearing a "yes" made all of those ACT tutoring sessions and hours spent on essays so worth it. I know the same will happen for you, whether it be school related, job related, or anything else in your future. Take it from me, things work out, even when you don't think they will.

And before I get questions about what fabulous school I'm talking about, I want to let you know that I'll be keeping this one a secret for awhile, as will A about her current college. (it's not the same one, as awesome as that would be!) I will say it is a medium sized LAC college somewhere in the USA.

Don't give up, if it's in me, it's in you!
love,
C

How To: Wait for a College Admission Decision Patiently

Hey, I'm C and I am the most impatient person on the face of this planet. I admit it. You all have no idea how much anxiety I've gotten waiting for college decisions. (and I'm also a chronic-non-procrastinator,) making my wait longer.

5 Tips To follow:
1. DO NOT CHECK COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL. If you don't know what that is, don't seek it out. I promise you. It's far to stressful.
2. Be prepared for one of four results: Accepted, Deferred, Waitlisted, or Denied. And imagine your situation for all situations. It helps a lot to be mentally prepared.
3. Don't start countdowns on countdowns on countdowns. Yup, I had countdowns on my phone, planner, every notebook, laptop, and yes: on my mirror. Which were great, until my dad told me how unhealthy that was. And he has a point. Limit yourself to one countdown. That's what I did, and it helped.
4. Distract Yourself. Working out has helped me a lot. I can focus my nervous energy on a bike, and not on staring at a piece of loose leaf writing XYZ University in my planner.
5. Remember, what's meant to be, will be.

PS-Am I the only one that is this crazy to have problems like this? It's just so hard when you know the exact day!

Gift Guide: Elder Women

I know the title sounds condescending and like we're implying "old lady", but what we mean is gifts for your mother, aunt, neighbor, family friend, or grandmother. These vary a lot from the young teen and twenty-somethings that we think most of you fall into.

1. Lollia Hand Creme: (my mother's favorite!)
2. Spa/Manicure Giftcard
3.Coffee + Coffee Mug
4. Kate Spade Hand in Hand Bangle
5. Jo Malone Candle
6. Cashmere Socks: (don't laugh! Many people would love to get these!)
7. Photo Frame: (throw in a photo of you and your grandmother and you have a winner holiday gift.)

Now is the time to get a gift that will benefit the woman! Don't give your mom a cookbook, unless she specifically wants it. That implies: make me this truffle pan seared flank with haricot verts right now. Moms are constantly doing things for us, so now is the time to remember THEM!

Dupable

Brow gel. Brow gel is something that has easily become a staple in my daily routine, full face of makeup or not. I love to have it. I feel more put together. But seriously why pay $15+ or a teeny tube when you can just use this:
My mom is the one who suggested this, so I can't take claim for the idea! It works really well. If color was your primary concern, than this isn't for you. If you just want to tame unruly brows, than this is your answer!

Do you use brow gel? What kind do you use?

Small Business Saturday

(note: none of the statements in this post are in anyway sponsored. We have not received any compensation for writing this post in any way.)

Small Business Saturday. It's a day that is focused on sharing the love to the people in our community who run their own small business. Here are some "smaller" brands we love!

1. Sloane Ranger
A darling brand, that is still brand new! It launched in 2011, and I picked up the most darling little coin purse (with the anchors!) and I love it. I see the quality in the way that the product is made, and I will definitely buy more! Check it out, these are a fun alternative the Vera Bradley coin purses and other bags.

A super cute jewelry website, they house fun and trendy statement pieces, and more traditional pieces like the monogrammed jewelry. This is a brand I don't own any of myself, but my mom has given some pieces as gifts, and they have been true crowded pleasers!

While this brand isn't so small anymore, it's still a great shop. Monograms galore! I asked for a few things from here for Christmas, and I hope santa is good to me ;). A great place to find anything and everything you could want monogrammed!

This is probably one of my favorite secret weapon brands. I fall in love with their little patterns, and their durability ranks an A+! Seriously the best. Check them out!

Another brand that is growing in popularity, with good reason! I have a headband or 2 from this line, and my sister has shorts that I may or may not borrow often. This line is all made in the USA, and has great quality to boot.

What are your favorite smaller brands? We love to add more to our repertoire! (we know we missed a few here!)

Black Friday

It's the day where the holiday commercialism gets into full throttle. Black Friday.

While Black Friday is pretty popular, the popularity has not come without controversy. For example:

One side says that it will shrink the population that camps out to purchase their new TV. Will it create less turmoil in the morning? We don't know.

The other side makes us wonder: Why are we shopping for things we don't need after a day of thanks? And shouldn't we be spending Thanksgiving eve with our families? And what about the people working in those stores? Do they have to miss out on Thanksgiving because of these sales starting so early?

We wonder: what side are you on? Is "Grey Thursday" acceptable, or is "Black Friday" already too far?

1. Car Charger: Almost always forgotten, but so helpful.
